About Us
In the fall of 2014, Ms. Monia Cheikh, a physics and engineering teacher in the Bryn Mawr School for Girls, created this team as a robotics after-school activity which first met four hours per week. Initially, the girls participated in FTC where together they built a robot from scratch and programed it to compete. After the competitions, the girls decided to remain as a team and enter in FabSLAM.
Members:
Ms. Cheikh:
Ms. Cheikh is a physics and engineering teacher in the Bryn Mawr School for Girls. She studied civil engineering in Homs, Syria and she is very interested in robotics and 3D printing. Ms. Cheikh taught robotics in the Y of Central Maryland, i2 camp and the Bryn Mawr School for girls. This is the second year that she is working with students to enter the FabSLAM 3D printing competition, and she can’t be more proud of the team’s determination, commitment, collaboration and open mind. Ms. Cheikh’s has been an amazing mentor so far and has done a wonderful job of guiding and supporting the team.
Mr. Letras:
Mr. Letras is the Assistant Director of Technology at The Bryn Mawr School, and he also teaches in the Upper School Computer Science department. He has always had an interest in tinkering and taking things apart. Some projects he's worked on in the past include building an arcade machine with Bryn Mawr students, and replacing his car's stereo system with a computer, touchscreen, and custom software. He is excited to be working with the team on this cycle of the 3D printing FabSlam, and is looking forward to the final presentation.
Mr. Curtis:
Mr. Curtis is the Director of Technology at The Bryn Mawr School, and also teaches programming in the Computer Science department. Justin has always enjoyed the blending of Computer Science, engineering, and tinkering and is very excited to be a part of this project. Justin's most recent creations include building instrument cables, and repurposing an old brief case and turning it into a guitar pedal board.
Natasha:
Natasha is a sophomore at the Bryn Mawr School. She has had some experience with 3D printing and graphic design, but she has never competed in a 3D printing competition. Her favorite thing about the 3D printing season so far has been prototyping and brainstorming designs. She joined the 3D printing team because she is interested in engineering and wants to be an engineer in the future. In addition to 3D printing, she plays handbells and chess.
Blien:
This is also Blien’s first year of doing 3D printing. Blien has always loved engineering and technology, so she thought joining the 3D printing team would be a great way to combine both. Her favorite part of the season was meeting new kids from different grades and seeing how different people’s ideas can come together to actually make something. Outside of 3D printing, this sophomore is a double language student, a math lover, and music fanatic. In the future she hopes to do something with linguistics, technology, or engineering.
Myra:
Myra, a freshman at Bryn Mawr, has had some experience with 3D printing prior to this year, but has never done 3D printing competitions. She joined the 3D printing team because she wanted to help create something using design and engineering. In addition to 3D printing, she is in the handbell choir, plays chess, and competes in It’s Academic!. Her favorite thing about 3D printing this year has been prototyping. In the future, she wants to go into something involving space, science, or math.
Christine:
A sophomore at the Bryn Mawr School, Christine has participated in a graphic design class in school. Although she has never been in an official 3D printing competition, Christine looks forward to competing this year. She has really enjoyed working on the team's website. Her interest in engineering has encouraged her to join the 3D printing team. Along with 3D printing, Christine trains at the Peabody Dance Department at Johns Hopkins.
Karolina:
Karolina is a sophomore at Bryn Mawr High School in Baltimore MD. She had some experience with 3D printing and engineering from the past, besides the inspiration from a purely mathematical and full of engineers family. She joined because she wanted to try out engineering and see if it fits her as well as her family. During the 3D printing season Karolina enjoys designing in TinkerCAD. When she grows up, Karolina wants to become an orthodontist or a computer engineer. This is because she enjoys programming and creating websites.
